Obama Commits the U.S. to Climate Action!

We did it!

We've all been working hard to urge the next U.S. President to re-enage the United States with the rest of the world. 50,000 of you have sent invitations urging the President-elect to show that after eight years of inaction, we are ready to work with other countries to stop climate change.

Today, in an address delivered at the Governor's Climate Summit, President-elect Obama made the following statement:

"Let me also say a special word to the delegates from around the world who will gather in Poland next month: your work is vital to the planet. While I won’t be President at the time of your meeting and while the United States has only one President at a time, I’ve asked Members of Congress who are attending the conference as observers to report back to me on what they learn there."

Here's what Bill McKibben had to say in response:

"After sending President-elect Obama nearly 50,000 invitations to join the world in the fight against climate change, we're excited to see that he's done just that. With his video address this morning, he re-engaged the United States in the international climate process that we've shamefully ignored for the last eight years.

Obama is the first American president who seems really willing to engage reality on this front, and reality comes with a number now: 350, the safe upper limit for C02 in the atmosphere in parts per million. Now that he's re-committed the U.S. to the international process, we hope President-elect Obama will help steer it towards this important 350 target.

It's true that we wanted Obama to go to Poland in person, but it's nice that he's pioneering low-carbon ways to communicate with the rest of the world. A President who's worried about his carbon footprint is something we support."

And similarly, while we might not all be able to be in Poland this December either, we are most definitely sending the 350 message from around the world.  Check out some of the latest 350 actions over the last few weeks:

India:

Kids for Tigers, Mumbai, India

Costa Rica:

Cost Rica

Chile:

Chile

USA:

Quilt

There will be a number of people respresenting 350 at the UN climate talks in Poland, and they'll be sure to deliver all the great photos and stories of the movement we're building. It's time to hold all our governments accountable to take the bold actions we need to get back below 350.

As a result of your (350.org) encouragement, I wrote an editorial that appeared in today's (11/19) Santa Fe New Mexican requesting Obama's attendance at the UN climate talks. I asked him to put climate change at the center of his agenda. US committment to climate and energy policy is connected to the war in Iraq, restoring foreign diplomacy, green job creation, rebuilding cities and rural economies, environmental restoration, educating children and aligning ourselves with a healthy future. We will all need to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

This is fantastic! You guys at 350, especially Bill, are true heros for your innovative ideas to bring this issue to the forefront. We're doing a Polar Plunge at Walden Pond on Dec. 6, 2:00 pm, International Climate Action Day, so that the world knows that US citizens are on board with the serious need to immediately address climate change.

There is no way to express the thanks and joy I feel at this moment when Barack Obama brought the United States back into the world community to lead the greatest fight that civilization will ever have addressed.

I worked for two years in Nevada to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. We volunteers met early in the morning and made phone calls late into the night. We walked in 110 degree heat in the middle of summer. We knocked on many, many indifferent doors, but some opened to us. We met curious, angry, kind, hostile, clueless, supportive and many grateful Americans. We went to training after training, rally after rally, we registered voters and dragged people to the polls. Many many of you did this, too. We got the job done. Together now we will save the world.

This is a great day. Thanks to all of you who are involved in this great movement. We will not let up until the job is done, and with the help of President Obama, we will take important and historic steps toward our goal. The world is looking up to the United States once again. Wow!

One of the ways in which we can contribute to the green movement is by understanding our individual impact on the planet. Have a look at www.myfootprint.org where we can check our individual ecological footprint. Thankyou.

Dear Presiden-Elect Obama,
All aspects of 'global heating' should be your first priority, in January and until people get the message. If you find intermissions in what you can do politically, keep busy installing solar and wind systems on the white house. If people question the importance of this issue, ask them where they got their information. I'd like some too, if I can believe it.

But don't concentrate on creating more jobs as even close to the main goal. The physics definition of "work" is "an expenditure of energy". Unnecessary work uses unnecessary human and industrial energy, and creates unnecessary pollution. The "economy", measured by the GDP, is about what's good for the capitalists and the corporations, not the people. Wastefulness is what mainly creates more jobs, and vice versa.

Instead, create a, yes, socialized, welfare system that works for the planet and replaces 'make-work' and corporate welfare with necessities and more - health care, education and councelling, public transit, and especially every form of birth control possible. Overpopulation is the route cause of most if not all our environmental and social problems. But don't give money, which is too easily misused.

Thanks for all you can do.

Dan Robinson

So if the economic crisis goes further for a couple of years & that our government is broken, does that mean plans for renewable energy will be doomed? President-elect Obama promises clean & energy jobs for reducing CO2 emissions, but it's not going to do any good. The clean & energy revolution will probably take more than 25 years, instead of Al Gore's plan of 10 years.
Does that mean the economy & government will be doomed? We'll soon find out in the next four years.

Though so important as the CO2 limit is a miriade of changes that are crucial to the health of the planet which so intimately impacts the people of the world and their health.
As of this writing the greed of the special interests in keeping secret forward thinking cures of disease places the responsibiity on the shoulders of the populace of the world.
We all have a major hurdle to force the clean up of the world for the health of planet Earth and the people that own it.

Yes it is time to celebrate that the USA will join the effort and that Obama understands the issue. Yet, we also can help everyday with our choices. Do we drive less? Do we recycle? Do we buy electric cars and support renewable energy sources like wind, solar by buying our electricity from those companies that offer it? Do we support technology like fusion power that will also provide clean energy? No I'm not talking nuclear and it's bomb potential and disposal problems, fusion like the sun: http://www.iter.org/
We are the solution to this problem all 6 billion of us. Yes we have elected leaders that are committed to solving this problem but they can't do it alone. We need to keep pushing the agenda of lifestyle changes toward sustainabiliy so that we don't need 8 planets just to support us.

Welcome to the future today now this moment. The past is behind us gone forever. All we can do is place one foot forward and then the next. Change can no longer be just a word. Our environment is challenging us to work together and stop living PRIVATE LIVES which ignore the ENVIRONMENTAL REALITY. If we ignore it, ENVIRONMENT MAY DESTROY US even if we feel BRAVE and WELL LOVED. IF we work together and stop being IGNORANT and AVOIDING THINKING about ISSUES OTHER THAN UNIMPORTANT MATTERS, we MIGHT have a chance to continue these LIVES we love so so much.

OUR WORLD is in trouble and it is our THOUGHTS that are related only to FEELINGS which are causing us to keep moving in the WRONG DIRECTION. We have no choice but to change and why not help make this world a better place. DISCUSSING WHAT WE DID THE DAY YEAR OR HOUR BEFORE should have VERY LITTLE IMPORTANCE. Addressing issues that are becoming WORSE and WORSE by the MINUTE should take full PRIORITY. WE are being abused as a society both by each other and the government at large.

OBAMA is extremely intelligent and obviously wants to make the right decisions. He needs our voice and continued thoughts. We must keep fighting and moving forward. Climate change, collapse of the economy, healthcare, and poverty need FULL ATTENTION. While there are OTHER important matters which matter to SOME, we must look first at those things which may and will make life difficult for all.

One step forward! And you know what they say about a journey of a thousand miles.
I hope that this is a sign of future global involvement in the going-green movement. I hope that my generation is paying attention to this kind of news in the US- we need everyone, and us "younguns" are just going to have to learn! I'm glad Obama is encouraging the movement and that he continues to do so throughout his presidency.
