Zanzibar Fishermen Take Action on 350
Okala Mohamed arrived at the 350Speaks Johannesburg summit in June after a gruelling 15-hour journey from his rural fishing village on the coast of Zanzibar, Tanzania. Okala and his fellow fishermen started a marine conservation group that has monitored fish populations on the reefs near his village. This October 24, he held a workshop to educate and mobilize his community about the dangers of climate change to their fishing-based lifestyle. Amazingly, Okala has no acess to internet. And yet, his photos arrived in our inbox just a few minutes ago -- he resourcefully linked up with a university nearby to cover the event and make sure the world knows that at least in his village, climate change is a real threat.
