Soldiers in Afghanistan for 350
This just came in from Korengal Valley, Kunar Province, Afghanistan:
The photo was taken in the remote Korengal Outpost in the Korengal Valley, Kunar Province, eastern Afghanistan. All the men are part of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. The vehicles in the background are no longer in use as the soldiers here walk everywhere when they go on key leader engagement with the local villages elders.

Understanding 350
- So, what is global warming and what's the problem anyway?
- And what does this 350 number even mean?
- If we're already past 350, are we all doomed?
- How do we create the political change to steer towards 350?
- How do we get the world on track to get to 350?
- How do we actually reduce carbon emissions to get to 350??
- Will this thing work? Will world leaders listen?
- Where did this 350 number come from?
- Isn't America the biggest source of the problem? What about China and India?
- 350 is just a number. Wouldn't "Climate Emergency" or "Clean Energy Now" be a better call to action?
- And what about all the other targets people are aiming for?
- Why October 24th?
- Why another organization--there are already too many things going on!
- Do you measure 350 in CO2 or CO2e?

Tell President Obama: Don't escalate the war in Afghanistan. Invest our huge military budget into fighting global warming. http://bit.ly/noafghansurge

Screw the soldiers in Afghanistan, I don't care whether they support 350 or not. A group of neo nazis might make a 350 display as well, but I assume you wouldn't post it on your webpage.

John - the policies of the US in Afghanistan may be unwise and overall do more harm than good, but I don't think the soldiers are the moral equivalent of Nazis. If we caught Osama bin Laden and generally left the area, certainly we would burn less carbon than we are now. Terrorist groups like Al Qeada cause people to focus on killing each other or avoiding getting killed, instead of things like the environment. If we have no hope of actually defeating Al Qeada, it would probably be better to pull out; but our policy there is stupid, not some Lebensraum policy of active evil.

John - I am so glad and thankful for free speech. That freedom which is protected by the same men in the picture is what gives you the right to voice your opinion. You don't have to be "pro-war" but you may want to think twice. You should also be happy that even overseas Americans are trying to get the word out for 350.

Anon, how is our freedom protected by these aggressors? Demestic liberties don't involve soldiers at all, and there's been no foreign threat in decades. In case you don't know the 911 attacks were planned in Germany and Saudi Arabia, not Afghanistan. Why don't we invade those countries too for "habouring terrorists"?

What moves me about this photo is that it demonstrates a broad and diverse base of support for 350, even from perhaps unexpected places. I really appreciate the diversity of the movement. Even though I don't support the war in Afghanistan, I appreciate that the fact that these guys CARE as people, not necessarily as soldiers. If we are going to change our ways as a species fast enough to make any difference in terms of climate change, we will need to do it all together, across ideological lines, across national lines, across political and social and cultural lines. . .so I am grateful to see this photo here.

If the US military goes green, there may be hope for the planet. Let's encourage intelligent choices wherever they take place. I'm proud of these soldiers and of the stand they've taken on the climate issue.

Yes, the war in Afghanistan is a tragedy, and I hope things take a turn for better for everyone there. Anyway, the fact that these soldiers take part to the campaign tells good things about them. Thanks for the photo, it's nice to have you with us!
