Transition Food Tree Forest Planting

Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 08:00 - 09:00

We will be planting 10 fruit and nut trees as part of Transition Cowichan's planting of 120 food trees in the Cowichan region - 10 trees in each of 12 communities.

This specific event is for Shawnigan Lake and is part of a larger Shawnigan Lake Arts and Multi-cultural place making event beginning on September 18th and 19th. So far, we have locations for 4-5 trees to be planted at 1756 Wilmot. We will be actively looking for folks to find a home for 5-6 more locations at the initial event, and please contact us if you are interested in seeing a few trees in your neighbourhood.

Expanding our regional food forest will add to our local forest’s ability to sequester carbon and contribute to local food security. By working with Cowichan Green Community's Fruit Save program we can ensure that the fruit and nuts from these trees are picked and shared between the pickers, the church community and the region’s food banks. As we plant, we will also celebrate our community.

We plan to dig and do the preparations needed to plant the trees on October 2nd (800-930am), and do the actual tree planting on October 10th (10/10/10) - Canadian Thanksgiving Sunday!
