Dale for the Day 2009
,
In Carbondale, Colorado we took the carbon out of Carbondale by changing the name of the town to Dale for the day with a mayoral proclamation. We contributed to the local food bank with nearly 350 pounds of donated food items. We also had participants sign a commitment adn petition to help the community reduce its overall carbon emissions through the use of alternative energy and transportation.
On a cold rainy day 165 people (kids, adults, babies, folks on crutches, senior citizens) came out to the communities new 3rd Street Center to kick off the 350 Dale for the Day event. The 3rd Street Center is the old elementary school that is getting transformed into an amazing non-profit community center. The Center is an example of Carbondale's commitment to refurbish and reuse buildings, support non-profits, and promise for sustainability. Then we rolled away on a human powered rolling parade through town and stopped along the way at Sopris Park for a large photo. We used bicycles to spell 'Dale' and kids to spell out 350. The rest of the folks circled the words on the ground and photos were taken. The parade then continued through town down the bike path to the localally owned Dos Gringos where we had 350 Dale's Pale Ale cans waiting our arival. Dale's Pale Ale was quick to sponsor the event after hearing about Dale for the Day. We also played a bunch of 350 youtube videos on the projector - pretty nice touch!
A very successful day - couldn't believe so many people came out on such a rainy cold day. Not a single participant showed up in a carbon emitting vehicle - pretty awesome!

Understanding 350
- So, what is global warming and what's the problem anyway?
- And what does this 350 number even mean?
- If we're already past 350, are we all doomed?
- How do we create the political change to steer towards 350?
- How do we get the world on track to get to 350?
- How do we actually reduce carbon emissions to get to 350??
- Will this thing work? Will world leaders listen?
- Where did this 350 number come from?
- Isn't America the biggest source of the problem? What about China and India?
- 350 is just a number. Wouldn't "Climate Emergency" or "Clean Energy Now" be a better call to action?
- And what about all the other targets people are aiming for?
- Why October 24th?
- Why another organization--there are already too many things going on!
- Do you measure 350 in CO2 or CO2e?
