Be a part of the most important hack in MIT history: stop climate change!
(at the same time as Obama's MIT speech!)
Converge on Killian Court with your laptop for 20 minutes starting at 12 pm on Friday, October 23rd to create and photograph a giant “<350” made of people hard at work. We will be drawing the attention of our leaders to the urgency of climate change and demanding their action, along with tens of thousands of other people in nearly 2,000 events in 150 countries around the world! You will also be able to listen to an audio broadcast of President Obama's speech (or watch on your laptop) and help remind him of the importance of a strong climate change mitigation strategy.
The weekend of October 23-25 will be the climax of organizing by 350.org, the first large-scale global grassroots campaign against climate change. Its supporters include leading scientists, the governments of 89 countries, a huge variety of environmental, health, development, religious NGOs, and citizens around the world. All agree that current atmospheric levels of CO2—390 parts per million—are causing damage to the planet and to its most vulnerable people. Participants in the day of action are calling for international government action at the Copenhagen climate conference, beginning on December 7, 2009. Immediate action is required to bring the Earth’s carbon level swiftly down to a sustainable level of 350 ppm or less and put us on a path toward building a clean, low-carbon future. We are calling you to join MIT's contribution to the 350 movement.
Join your fellow MITers for the most important hack in the Institute's history! While most hacks, constructed in secret and under the cover of night, aim to send a clever message, influencing our politicians to respond to climate change demands a massive show of human support. Hundreds of people will depict the expression “<350” by standing in formation in Killian Court, and a photograph of this aerial artwork will be submitted with thousands similar to Copenhagen delegates and made available for participants. Are you already busy working to solve our energy, environment, or development challenges? Great! Bring your laptop or work with you to show our leaders that MIT will keep working hard on technology and demand that they get to work on serious policy in Copenhagen.

Understanding 350
- So, what is global warming and what's the problem anyway?
- And what does this 350 number even mean?
- If we're already past 350, are we all doomed?
- How do we create the political change to steer towards 350?
- How do we get the world on track to get to 350?
- How do we actually reduce carbon emissions to get to 350??
- Will this thing work? Will world leaders listen?
- Where did this 350 number come from?
- Isn't America the biggest source of the problem? What about China and India?
- 350 is just a number. Wouldn't "Climate Emergency" or "Clean Energy Now" be a better call to action?
- And what about all the other targets people are aiming for?
- Why October 24th?
- Why another organization--there are already too many things going on!
- Do you measure 350 in CO2 or CO2e?
