Dune Planting
Saturday, 24 October, 2009 - 09:00
Urban Paradise Guild was formed to fight Sea-Level Rise by creating and protecting habitat and enabling sustainability.
According to the United Nations, South Florida is more at risk to the combined effects of Sea-Level Rise and Hurricane Storm-Surge than any metropolitan area on the Planet Earth. We are MOTIVATED.
For us, EVERY DAY is a DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION.
We have activities every weekend in October.
See http://www.urban-paradise.org/activities
We're Dune Planting on both 10/18 & 10/24.
If you can't come out to work with us, consider starting a Native Community Nursery in your yard. We'll use the plants you grow in habitat projects!

Starts at 9am, ends around noon.
BBQ is optional.
Historic Virginia Key Beach has been the site of a series of Habitat Restoration projects by members of the Nature & Environment Committee. I am a member of this committee, and have led groups of students removing invasives from restoration areas.
Near the end of September, I encountered and photographed a Sandhill Crane in an area where we have been doing Stewardship since January. This is a VERY encouraging sign!

Sand Dunes have been re-created to replace those taken away during the past. They must be planted with Natives quickly to prevent Invasive Exotic Plants from taking hold.
RSVP is required by 10/15: In order to know how many plants to order, we have to know the size of the workforce.
To RSVP, send an e-mail to:
