Northern Nevada's Interfaith Gathering for Climate Action
24 October 2009 - 5:00pm
We begin gathering Saturday October 24th at 5 pm. By 6 pm we will be sharing a sustainable harvest meal. The basics will be provided, but it is potluck if you can contribute.
At 6:45 we will take our event's 350 photograph. At 7 pm we will begin our Film Festival with the movie "Renewal" followed by a discussion. Other movies, and videos will follow, lasting until at least 11 pm. We will also have an "advocacy area" set-up with letter writing, phone calling, email, and petitions promoting climate change solutions and renewable energy.
We are encouraging faith groups and other organizations or individuals throughout our region to sound out 350 times beginning at at 5pm. Ring your church bell, or honk your horn, or beat a drum 350 times to highlight this important number -- a scientifically established safe level of parts per million for CO2, that we have now surpassed, and must work to return to. We do not have a bell, so will be striking a gong at 5 pm to call people to this action.
Even if you are unaffiliated, you are welcome to find your own bell, drum, or gong to use in your neighborhood! Ten electric cars could circle up and take turns blowing their horns, around and around 35 times. Document what you did with a photo, holding a sign with 350 painted on it, and upload it to this 350.org site, or bring it to our interfaith ingathering and we will get it uploaded there. Please call, or email us telling what you did at 5pm, so we can include your 350 call-out in our write-up describing this historic day in Northern Nevada.
Another way we will highlight the 350 theme is by asking people to dedicate 350 minutes to environmental reflection, and action this day. That's 5 hours and 50 minutes. You may spend all 350 minutes at this Interfaith Gathering. People can even sleep over if they wish. Or you might begin by running errands on a bike, or riding a bus when you normally would drive, or working on an environmental service project, like picking up trash, and recycling as much of it as you can. If you ride Citifare, carpool, walk, or ride a bike in getting to us - commute time counts too! Electric vehicles, and bio-fueled vehicles can count their commute time as well.
If the "Interfaith" label does not encourage you to come join us, please do not let it discourage you. Any Earth Loving person is welcome. Pagans, agnostics, and atheists are welcome! Even climate change skeptics are welcome as long as they listen and talk without disrupting the event. Hope to see you on October 24th!

Understanding 350
- So, what is global warming and what's the problem anyway?
- And what does this 350 number even mean?
- If we're already past 350, are we all doomed?
- How do we create the political change to steer towards 350?
- How do we actually reduce carbon emissions to get to 350??
- Will this thing work? Will world leaders listen?
- Where did this 350 number come from?
- Isn't America the biggest source of the problem? What about China and India?
- 350 is just a number. Wouldn't "Climate Emergency" or "Clean Energy Now" be a better call to action?
- And what about all the other targets people are aiming for?
- Why another organization--there are already too many things going on!
- Do you measure 350 in CO2 or CO2e?
