"The Orchard Project Music and Arts Festival: Day of Environmental Action and Family Fun"
24 October 2009 - 10:00am
"In Martinsburg, West Virginia (eastern panhandle) on Oct 24 from 10 am to sundown, several local churches, students, and representatives of environmental non-profit groups will be gathering at a community garden to promote environmental awareness and celebrate family unity through art and music (such as drum circles and teaching kids to make birdhouses). The event will provide the opportunity to inform participants of all ages of the causes and solutions to global warming as part of the 350 Campaign through various speakers AND inform the community at large via the media about this International Day of Climate Action. Speakers will include local advocates and environmental/alternative energy specialists to use this as an opportunity to educate the public on local policies-projects that serve to harm or protect the environment around the water and air pollution, and to encourage people to practice recycling and energy conservation. Participants will be asked to stand in the formation of "350" on the grounds of the Orchard House as a collaborative art piece, holding umbrellas to represent a sense of protection of weather extremes from the ensuing effects of global warming. The umbrellas also represent a reinforcement of our ozone layer through collectively reducing CO2 emissions.
The event is primarily a day of family fun, as The Orchard Project (TOP) wraps up it’s season with the community garden. TOP is a social ministry of a the Trinity United Methodist Church of Martinsburg working to assist families in need and there is a $5 admission (discount for youth and children 13 and below are free) to help raise money for their community garden supplies. The event will also be used as a link to the movement around climate change awareness in solidarity with other actions taken around the world this day leading up to the December climate talks in Copenhagen. Come out to show your support in the global movement to protect our environment and practice green living.
