'350' in ice blocks melting on the beach

THE PLAN: a beach gathering around the number '350', set up in giant ice blocks on Muizenberg beach. As the ice melts, we will take a series of 'time-lapse' photographs, to be stitched together later into a freeze-frame 'movie'. In each photograph, a different group of people will be pictured.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Come along on Saturday, help us set up the ice sculpture, and join us for a beach party! You can use this event to showcase your own 350 ideas (see below for some we have brainstormed), or join us in the photographs. Help us make ice blocks, hand out information, offer your photographic skills, or climb Muizenberg mountain to take pictures of the event from the shark-spotters vantage point. Plan your tableau for YOUR freeze-frame contribution to the movie.

LOGISTICS: ice blocks can be any size but we suggest two sizes: (1) plastic-lined cardboard boxes as moulds (standard 6-bottle wine boxes). Use heavy-duty clear plastic to line the box, stand in a walk-in freezer and fill with a bucket of water. (2) Use 5L plastic ice-cream tubs to make blocks in your home freezer. Approximately 20 blocks will be needed for each number, so please bring along as many as you can make. The ice blocks will be set up in the morning at 9 am - bring your ice contribution and we will pile it into shape. Beach sand will be heaped up into a slope to make a good backdrop for the ice blocks. The tide is perfect on the day: sunrise at 5.54 am; low tide at lunchtime.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
Although we have lots of ideas, we can only do so much on our own. We need YOU to bring ice blocks - as many as you can - yourselves, and to carry out your plans for your own beach demonstration, if you would like one. If you are a school, church, sports team or other group, we'd love you to design your own pose in one of the time-lapse photographs, making your own display. If you are an individual or a family, come and join others in one of the photographs. Either way, use the ice sculpture site as a place to get YOUR message across.
