River of Action: Portland
24 October 2009 - 11:00am
Hundreds of kayakers, canoeists and paddleboarders will gather on the Willamette River in downtown Portland and form a giant floating 350. This will be the flagship event for River of Action, an effort to get paddlers across the country to rally together and represent 350 on their local waterways.
The 350 will be formed just south (upstream) of the Burnside Bridge on the west side of the river. Primary photo angle will be midway across the Burnside Bridge, with downtown PDX in the background. This summer, a group of us got together in Sellwood to test the idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVzFekBfIvU
Please RSVP if you plan to attend, as this will help us work out the logistics as best we can in advance.
Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe, Northwest River Guides, Next Adventure, Portland Kayak Company, and Kayak Shed have all agreed to provide kayaks and equipment for folks who want to participate but don't have their own gear. Contact them to make reservations in advance.

Please show up in time to be on the water by 11. Many of us will be heading to the rally at Pioneer Square that is scheduled from 1:00-3:00, so we'd love to get started on time! Details on the Pioneer Square rally can be found here: http://350oregon.org/
*UPDATE*
So as it turns out, there's a huge rowing regatta staging at the launch spot for our action. So parking is going to be limited. If you're willing and able, would you mind contacting either Alder Creek or Northwest River Guides to reserve a boat to use for free, then either biking, walking or taking public transport to get to the Portland Boathouse instead of driving?

How it's going to work on Saturday:
We're asking everyone to show up between 10:00 and 11:00, with the goal of getting on the water by 11:00. A framework of the 350 will be made with a core crew (20-40 folks likely, depending on the overall turnout). We'll gather the first 30 or so folks who are there and ready, divide into 3 groups—one for each digit—then head up to the Burnside Bridge to lay it out. Once that's made, everyone else will gather around the frame to make it "bold", we'll tidy things up, snap some photos, and upload them to 350.org.

Understanding 350
- So, what is global warming and what's the problem anyway?
- And what does this 350 number even mean?
- If we're already past 350, are we all doomed?
- How do we create the political change to steer towards 350?
- How do we actually reduce carbon emissions to get to 350??
- Will this thing work? Will world leaders listen?
- Where did this 350 number come from?
- Isn't America the biggest source of the problem? What about China and India?
- 350 is just a number. Wouldn't "Climate Emergency" or "Clean Energy Now" be a better call to action?
- And what about all the other targets people are aiming for?
- Why another organization--there are already too many things going on!
- Do you measure 350 in CO2 or CO2e?
