South Bay Los Angeles 350 Climate Action

Saturday, 24 October, 2009 - 15:00

Join us on our beautiful and legendary South Bay beaches famous the world over for surfing, volleyball and Beach Boys songs as we demonstrate our support for the 350 International Day of Climate Action.

Southern California beach lovers from all walks of life and from all over the Los Angeles area will be gathering at 3:00 pm starting at the Manhattan Beach pier where we'll form the Amazing Waving Human Tide Line to dramatically showcase where sea level rise will be bringing the ocean waves if climate change scientists' predictions of sea level rise come true.

Members of over 30 different SB/Los Angeles groups have come together for this Climate Action, including Greenpeace, the City of Manhattan Beach, League of Woman Voters of the Beach Cities, the Surfrider Foundation, the South Bay Cities Council of Governments, OxFam USA, EcoMedia, Friends of Madrona Marsh, the Environmental Priorities Network, State Senator Jenny Oropeza, Congresswoman Jane Harman, The South Bay Environmental Services Center, L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe, L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Urban Semillas, Waste Management, Heal the Bay, Alliance for Climate Education, Citizens Climate Lobby and others - and we're growing every day.

This will be a fun, family-friendly event for people concerned about climate change who want to show their support for action.  We will feature a series of very short 350 endorsement statements from elected officials, students, local business professionals, workers from all levels of industry, seniors, families and activists.

We want you to be there with us to help show the world how much we care about the beach, our ocean and the livable climate we leave for our children and the next generations.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Sept 29th to endorse our South Bay 350 Climate action and declared October 24, 2009 “International Day of Climate Action,” in Los Angeles County. The Board "strongly urges" all citizens of the County to attend our action in Manhattan beach. We say, "Come on down!"

We understand that the consequences of our energy choices here in the United States are already being felt by our brothers and sisters across the sea in the South Pacific islands who are already suffering from sea level rise and will soon become climate change refugees. We gather in solidarity with them and in the knowledge that the same fate awaits us unless we steer back towards 350.
