Oxfam New Zealand - 350 Islands for Change
Friday, 23 October, 2009 - 07:45
Oxfam New Zealand will highlight the human impact of climate change on Pacific people with an art installation of 350 Pacific Islands 'hung out to dry', erecting a gigantic washing line in the ocean and hanging 350 t-shirts on it, each depicting a different Pacific Island name. This will be at Takapuna beach.
We will film the event. It starts with a Pacific Islander wading out to the line, taking of his/her t-shirt and pegging it to the line. This is repeated by a couple more islanders. Then Oxfam volunteers quickly peg up more t-shirts, the camera rolls and a couple more islanders wade through the water, take off their t-shirts and hang them up. Volunteers then peg up the remaining t-shirts bar one. This is left for Jane, a 9 year old Samoan, who will wade through the ocean, take off her shirt and hang it from the line, turn to the camera and recite a poem she has written especially for the day of action - about climate change, her future and 350 Pacific Islands 'hung out to dry'.
We also hope to take part of the installation to the 350 Festival on the 24th in Tahaki Reserve, Mt. Eden.
