Vigil in US Consulate, Sandhurst, Johannesburg

11 December 2009 - 2:00pm - 3:30pm

Join us for a candlelight vigil outside the US Consulate to focus on the message that the USA can light the way to 350 and our survival!

Our world leaders will be meeting in Copenhagen from 7th - 18th December to decide our future, and the USA is unfortunately proving to be the most obstructionist of all the wealthy nations. Currently the US emissions target is a paltry 3% reduction below 1990 levels - very far away from the 40% science is saying is necessary. The USA now holds a big key to unlock the climate treaty process, and we need Obama and the US Congress to turn that key.

In Cape Town, Durban and Joburg, simultaneous vigils will take place outside the US Consulates in each city at 3pm on Friday, 11th December - before the consulate staff leave work. We'll be gathering with candles and 350 banners and posters to tell the US to support the 350 goal and to agree to bold cuts in reducing their emissions.

(These will be peaceful vigils without an 'anti-American' tone - we need to send a strong message to the US, but we want to send it in a way that it can be received and that speaks to the collaborative spirit needed to address climate change around the world.)

We know the sun will be shining at 3pm so the candles are symbolic and part of a large movement of candle vigils over this important weekend.

Please join us and bring as many friends as possible - the more of us there are, the more impactful this effort will be!
