Vigil in Woodstock

Friday, 11 December, 2009 - 18:00 - 18:45

We will gather at 6 pm around the statue of Peter Muhlenberg in front of the courthouse at Court and Main Streets in downtown Woodstock, VA.

Why Rev. Muhlenberg? In the middle of a 1776 sermon in a Woodstock church, this Virginia patriot tore open his clerical robe to reveal a military uniform beneath. The cause of liberty could not wait; he challenged his congregants to join him as he stormed out of the church to fight for liberty.

Just as the cause of liberty could not wait in Muhlenberg's time, the cause of a sustainable planet cannot wait in our time. We are inspired by Muhlenberg's sense of urgency. Our cause is the most urgent cause of our time.

We will take turns reading aloud portions of a speech by Maldives President Nasheed and will add comments, poems, and sentiments of our own. We will close by adding our candles to some candles already encircling the Muhlenberg statue.
