Vigil in Denver
11 December 2009 (All day)
What: Hope for Copenhagen Vigil
When: Thursday, Dec. 10, 5:00 - 5:45 PM
Where: 18th St. and Champa, outside Senator Mark Udall's office in downtown Denver
Why: To indicate our hope and our determination for world leaders to commit to a strong climate agreement limiting global emissions of greenhouse gases.
While President Obama has indicated his intention to attend the Copenhagen summit, legislation committing the United States to bold action is currently languishing in the United States Senate. While Senator Udall is a strong advocate for clean energy, we need to let him and the rest of the Senate know that we do not want to wait until "sometime next year" for clean energy legislation to clear the Senate.
Not only is Dec. 10 the day before the opening of the Copenhagen conference, is it the day before the beginning of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, and the day following Bodhi Day, when many Buddhists observe the attainment of Enlightenment by Gautama. It is also during the Christian season of Advent, a time of hope and expectation. This is a time for us to hold vigil for enlightenment and courage for world leaders gathered in Copenhagen, as well as for our leaders here in the United States.
Come and show your support for national and international climate agreements which can begin to put the brakes climate change which threatens everything we hold dear. Bring lights-- flashlights, glow-sticks, candles (with wind and drip protection). Bring children-- make this a "teachable moment" for the next generation, and to remind us why we must commit to reducing greenhouse pollution. Bring prayers, poems, songs. Call your city council people and legislators, and invite them to join you at the vigil.
This is a vigil hosted by the Greenpeace 350 Campaign and specifically the Colorado Interfaith Power and Light and Eco-Justice Ministries.
It is a worldwide event and will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10th
