Clothesline

Saturday, 24 October, 2009 - 12:00

Based on an earlier performance, "Mothers and Daughters" which honors what has been handed down from one generation to the next, Clothesline speaks to my Eastern European grandmother's world in which clothes were washed by hand with washboard and tub. I will be washing my clothes publicly the way my grandmother did privately, hanging them out to dry on a clothesline at 53 Mercer in New York City. My grandmother and mother were also artists. Women, domesticity, creativity and everyday tasks converge in an ever-changing notion of a larger home we all share and must care for.

This simple act of hanging clothes on a line to dry speaks to the importance of traditions that take on new relevance today, in offering simple alternatives that partner with our planet by conserving energy not depleting it.
