Reef Check Hawaii Survey

24 October 2009 (All day)

Please Join Us for A Reef Check Survey on Saturday, Oct 24th at 9am at Kahekili Beach Park in Kaanapali (also known as Airport beach) off of Kai Ala St. In the event that ocean conditions are unfavorable, the alternate site will be Kapalula Bay. PLEASE RSVP

Reef Check Hawaii (http://reefcheckhawaii.org/ or http://www.reefcheckhawaii.org/about.htm) surveys use indicator species to assess coral reef health. The standardized procedures are comparable to other sites across the globe in this international database. Five categories of data are collected: fish, invertebrates, substrate, coral disease, and site impacts. It is appropriate to be familiar with Hawaii's marine organisms for this survey. The list of indicator species is short and methods are simple to learn. Training will begin at 9am; survey at 10am. The goal is to collect data from two transects, one shallow (2-6m), one mid depth (6-10m).

Surveys are performed on SCUBA, so volunteers need to be comfortable multitasking underwater and have excellent buoyancy control. If you have a tank, please bring it to use. Some tanks will be provided, but please donate the use of your tanks if you have them. Reef Check Hawaii is a non-profit organization.
