MARCHING BACKWARDS AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING
24 October 2009 - 12:00pm
Democrats Abroad along with Emision Cero and The Climate Project will join the initiative sponsored by 350.org to celebrate the International Day of Climate Action. In support of President Obama´s environmental policies and conscious of the priority given to the control of climate change by the governments of the U.S., Spain, and other EU members, DA has joined 350.org in its worldwide initiative by organizing a race backwards in Madrid. 350.org takes its name from the ideal number of carbon dioxide in parts per million (ppm) that scientists have set as a safe upper limit in the atmosphere. The current 387 ppm of CO2 in the air we breathe today call for urgent action.
The march will take place backwards in the pedestrian stretch of Calle Fuencarral, an example of sustainable city living. It measures exactly 350 meters! It begins at 12:00 pm and will consist of marching or walking backwards the 350 meters from the start line at the corner of Fuencarral and Gran Vía to the finish line before the Mercado de Fuencarral. Marching or walking backwards will be a symbol of the need to go back to 350 ppm in order to achieve long-term climate stability. This march takes place the same day another 3769 events will be held in 163 countries around the world aimed at attracting the attention of our leaders in order to encourage them to come up with a new climate control treaty in Copenhagen.
The first backward marchers to arrive at the finish line will receive an olive tree sapling.

Understanding 350
- So, what is global warming and what's the problem anyway?
- And what does this 350 number even mean?
- If we're already past 350, are we all doomed?
- How do we create the political change to steer towards 350?
- How do we get the world on track to get to 350?
- How do we actually reduce carbon emissions to get to 350??
- Will this thing work? Will world leaders listen?
- Where did this 350 number come from?
- Isn't America the biggest source of the problem? What about China and India?
- 350 is just a number. Wouldn't "Climate Emergency" or "Clean Energy Now" be a better call to action?
- And what about all the other targets people are aiming for?
- Why October 24th?
- Why another organization--there are already too many things going on!
- Do you measure 350 in CO2 or CO2e?
