Work Party London - Fall Planting at an Organic Farm
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 13:00 - 16:00
On 10/10/10 we will work on a local organic farm to plant garlic and contribute to the local food supply. Garlic is a symbol in Ontario of how difficult it has become to obtain food that is grown locally. Most of the supply comes from China often at extemely low prices because they are using Ontario as a dumping ground.
We live in one of the best agricultural areas of the country, yet we cannot easily buy local food, developments pave over rich agricultural land, canning plants are closed, farmers go out of business because they cannot compete with cheap imports.
Buying local helps the local economy and cuts carbon emissions. As part of this work group you will learn about the difficulties organic farmers face and you will be helping to supply the local market with locally grown food. You will also get outside and get your hands in the soil as we each attempt to plant 350 garlic cloves and leave them to overwinter and burst forth as new plants in the spring.
Once you sign up details of the event will be sent.
