Community Day of Service and Winchester Week of Environmental Action and Awareness

Winchester has many organizations working on our impact on the Environment and Climate. Our goal is to bring their individual efforts together in collaboration for a week of events beginning on 10-10-10.

10-10-10 GLOBAL DAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
The week begins with a gathering on the Town Commons at noon on Sunday, October 10. There will be refreshments and music and an opportunity to help out our town. We’ll be joining with thousands of town, villages and communities around the globe in what will be the largest community day of service.
Start the day by walking, biking or carpooling to worship or your morning activities
Try going 3.50 hours without the use of fuel or electricity…walk, ride a bike, turn off the TV…
• Bike along some of the scenic bikeways of our area
o 9 am bike trip leaves from Ginn Field led by Jay Olmsted of the Greenway Committee
o 2 pm bike trip leaves from the Common
• Winter Pond cleanup, from 10 am on, meet at Woodside Dr pond area with gloves, rakes, clippers and green bags.
• Enjoy a guided tour of Wright Locke Farm (10 am)
Following a brief opening ceremony and concert at the Town Commons at noon you’ll have the chance to:
• Learn about alternative transportation options and get a free bike checkup
• Sign up for one of a limited number of free electrical use audits of your home
• Hike and clean the Fells and/or local parks
• Help remove invasive species from our town’s trails and parks with the Conservation Commission
• Enjoy a powerful movie on ways people are making a difference with the environment stating at 2pm at the Unitarian Church
• Pumpkin Festival and environmental information and meditations at Second Congregational Church
• With more to come that day

SUSTAINABLE WINCHESTER DEDICATION OF HIGH SCHOOL SOLAR PANELS
• At 3 pm on October 13th, attend the celebratory ribbon-cutting at Winchester High School for the two new solar panels awarded to Winchester in the recent Solar Challenge.

ENVIRONMENTAL FAIR, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16
• The Environmental Fair will be held at the town commons from 9:30 to 3 pm with informational booths from groups and businesses to help us live more gently, economically and sustainably on our planet. (see winchesterfarmersmarket.org for more information)
• Lectures and presentations at First Congregational Church
• Live music and children’s activities at the Commons.
• Troop 503 will sponsor a cleanup of the road to Skillings Field and Rock Climbing after on Saturday morning Oct 16 Meet at 166 Swanton St. at 9 am.
• At 11am at the Environmental Fair the Climate Action Task Force appointed by the Selectmen will present their report for the town to representatives of the Selectmen
• Biologist Nancy Lin will lead a group for those interested in learning about some of our local flora and fauna. It will begin at the Commons during the Environmental Fair at 10, Noon and 2.
• Pick up a free spruce seedling to plant and learn more about tree planting in Winchester from the Winchester Street Tree Committee.
