Jozi 350 Climate Action Day
Saturday, 24 October, 2009 - 10:00
Yeeeehaaaaaaa! We did it!
Apologies for taking all week to send this out, I must say that Anthea and I are still recovering from Saturday. Shew, event organising really takes it out of you! I wanted to send you a couple of the magnificent photos taken on the day. These are not all of them. I will upload the rest to the '350.org Southern Africa' Facebook page and also to the event page. You can also find them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/350org/ Just search for Johannesburg. If you have any photos of your own from the event that you would like to upload, you can email them to: photos@350.org.
I heard that they received over 19 000 photos from the day which explains why the Jozi 350 ones are not on the 350.org website. But never fear! We feature prominently in the video, see here: http://www.350.org/oct24-vid
This was the video that was shown on the screens in Times Square New York. Woo Hooo!! Massive thanks to Victoria Landey for filming us so beautifully and then sending the clips so speedily to New York. Thanks again Tori. Our 'Jozi 350' can also be seen in the photo of the Times Square screen, see here: http://www.350.org/home?page=10
As well as this, I was asked to do a live interview on Etv's 24 hour news channel, so we were on the 7pm news and were their top story all night. And, as for the rest of the world, well, I'm sure most have you have already been onto the 350.org website and seen the extraordinary global movement that we were proudly part of.
Thanks must go again to:
* The ladies of the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee for the singing and the jiving!
* St Francis Church in Parkview and St Luke's in Norwood as part of the JHB Anglican Environmental Initiative
* The students at VEGA imagination lab for designing the flyers, coming from so far and entertaining us on the day with their flick flacks
* Rabelani and the City of Jo'burg and Vincent from Dyambwini for making the postcards to Zuma possible (we collected nearly 200 and will deliver them to him in the coming weeks along with a photo album of the Jo'burg 350 Day)
* Aragorn and the Vegan Society for the hotdogs and fruit.
* Makoma and Earthlife Africa JHB for the moral support!
* The wonderful photographers: Lukas Hueller, Claire Sternberg and Chris Saunders.
* Mimmi and Moses at City Parks for all your help.
* And of course, Anthea for being flippen brilliant all the time.
Lastly, the biggest thanks of all must go to you guys for spreading the word, rolling up your sleeves and getting involved and making a tiny bit of a difference. I feel Jo'burg has some way to go with getting people voluntarily out on the streets and making a noise about Climate Change, but we've got to start somewhere ne? And Saturday was proof that some of us are ready to tear ourselves away from our braais and get all participatory-like. Now for the rest....
Next up is the Global Day of Climate Action on the 12th of December (please see http://www.globalclimatecampaign.org/ for more) right in the middle of the Copenhagen Negotiations. Earthlife Africa Jhb and Well Worn Theatre are planning a week of activities: workshops, events, theatre, etc leading up to this day. If you would like to get involved with any of these preparations or have any suggestions for activities and crowd gathering tactics, please stay in touch and carry on Climate Activating as much as you can. In the meantime you can find updates on our website: http://www.wellworn.org.za/well-worn-journal/
Please let's stay in touch. Together we really can make this a movement.
Thanks very much.
Kyla :)
