Sitting in Silence to Save our World
Saturday, 24 October, 2009 - 10:00
Where: Frank Kitts Park, Wellington waterfront
Join us for 350 minutes of silent meditation, contemplation or prayer on the International Day of Climate Action.
Come and sit for as long as you wish BYO seating.
Why sitting in silence?
- A simple way in which people of all faiths and none can come together, with a spiritual focus, to express our shared concerns about the impact of climate change on the future of life on this planet Earth.
- A powerful way in which we can re-connect with our inherent wisdom and compassion - qualities that are both essential in order for humanity to overcome the huge problems that climate change presents us with.
- A time to step out of the usual busy "doing" and "getting" of our daily lives which, when taken to excess, is the underlying cause of human made climate change.
We will "open" the silence with the sound of a gong and "close" by sounding the gong for 350 seconds.
There will be a participants book available for people's comments which will be presented to Hon. Nick Smith, Minister for Climate Change, after the event.
Some ways in which you can help (you might think of others!):
- Distributing posters.
- Getting the word out in your own community.
- Being part of a roster of people committed to sitting and/or welcoming for a specific time period on the day.
- Or ... by just coming along on the 24th October!
