3500 Trees

Saturday, 24 October, 2009 - 08:00

On Saturday, October 24th, The New School's Tishman Environment and Design Center will plant 350 trees ten times across NYC, for a total of 3500 trees, to promote activism on climate change and to directly influence local climate in New York City. This effort is in collaboration with the larger MillionTreesNYC volunteer effort that will plant a total of 20,000 trees on Saturday. By planting 350 trees ten times in one day we will signify our solidarity with the over 1500 climate actions taking place on Saturday as part of 350.org.

Help us directly contribute to carbon absorption and to the green infrastructure of NYC while getting the word out about climate change and how trees can help. There is still time to get involved. We are responsible for putting 3500 trees into the ground in just a few hours in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. If you'd like to help plant trees early this Saturday morning, contact professor Timon McPhearson at mcphearp@newschool.edu ASAP.

Details are:

We will be planting trees at 4 sites (Pelham Bay Park -Orchard Beach: Bronx, Marine Park: Brooklyn, Alley Pond Park: Queens, and Clove Lakes Park: Staten Island) in the 4 boroughs mentioned above. Please see this link for directions to each site.

You'll also notice that the MTNYC campaign considers the availability for volunteering now closed. Volunteers for our concurrent 350 event will NOT be checking in directly with the MTNYC volunteer efforts when you arrive at the sites. Rather, you'll check in with a faculty member associated with this effort. Also, our work starts early. We prefer volunteers show up at 8:30am, though we will be planting until the early afternoon. You are responsible for getting yourselves to and from the sites. Please plan ahead as not all sites are easily accessible by public transit.

Wear your 350 shirts, bring a sign, or anything that helps make for a good photo opportunity. Also note the weather forecasts suggest rain, so dress accordingly (meaning, your shoes will get muddy).
